Andrew and his “1kg more” program

Andrew, named Zhihai Zhu in Chinese, who quitted his job in 2006 then became a full-time volunteer, devoting himself into promoting the charity travel program “1kg more”. The volunteer labor has made over 100 times since the website established 3years ago, covering those areas below: Guangdong, Sichuan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Hebei, Shanxi, Xinjiang, Xizang, Zhejiang, Gansu, Shanxi, etc. His blog， “ Andrew’s diary”, which was nominated in Deutsche Welle International Weblog Awards 2005 and  honored one of the “ the 77 New Cultural Pioneers” by  <City Pictorial> magazine.  

The Twinbooks program is a new member of “1kg more”; we cooperate with the publishing company to publish books suitable for rural children. With every sale record in town, the consumer could serve online donating one more to a country child; therefore, we call them Twinbooks. Meanwhile, the two children could get in touch with each other by the unique code on the book, which also give them chances to join the following charity program.

The charity campaign “into the primary school of the poverty area” organized by Safeguard and “1kg more” volunteer group, is now recruiting volunteers nationwide. If you are kindly enough; if you are willing to help the children; if you have a blog and if you join us safeguard volunteer blog group, then you are welcomed to be one of us-the volunteer of “establish a health great wall for china”. The top 10 volunteers selected as our “health representative”, according to the ballot amount, would be guided by the volunteer from 1kg more group to join the journey-visiting those primary school of poor areas in western china, communicating and helping them. Besides donating books and health education materials, our “health representatives” will give a voluntary health lecture for the children, helping them live a healthier life by keeping a good habit.

1, 1kg more is a non-profit volunteer organization , therefore, the health representative should afford these costs by him/herself: round-trip tickets, room and board.。

2, limited by the condition of poor districts, we make things as simple as we can, all of the members will live in the residents′house

Andrew’s brief introduction: 

I come from a volunteer organization named “1kg more”. I am found of traveling, especially such beautiful places where few people like traveling to.

Along my journey, I found out most of the villages are poor.

Therefore, we called everybody to bring 1kg more when traveling, bringing some books and stationary to the rural children.

We hope to help them in this way. Meanwhile, the more I travel, the more I learn about these children. In many circumstances, they are definitely the same with my imagination. As referred above, they are poor, so poor than you can imagine, most of them only get one clothes for an entire season, furthermore, which is even got from donation. 

I have been with this girl for 4 days, who never changed her clothes. Seeing I was photographing, she  

Just putted a kite in front to hide the clothes.

And this smiling girl, owing to the bad sanitation condition, whose arms are full of eczema. Although living in poverty, they are as happy as you can see on the photos. Their happiness changed my mind; I began to realize that all the children are born with happiness, which would never change by poverty or wealth.

They are passionate about study. Although the conditions and chances are much tinier comparing with the children in city, they never quit and keep moving forward.

Not alone with that, they also have good manners. See the children having picnic with me.

Before the picnic, I bought them some bangers. Right after I paid, some of the children had already put the coin into my hand. Who could ask them to pay, for just 7 yuan in total? But they did pay, they are not rich but have good manner.

The key point is: they are talented too. Here are some pictures of their hometown draw by themselves, with flowers, trees, birds and house on.

As everyone can see, this is what I know about the country children. They are poor, even not sanitary, but they are happy, they have passion for study, they are genius, and they have good manners. So, what I want to tell everybody is: these country children, they do not need our sympathy, they deserve respect and worship from the very bottom of our heart. They are so beautiful!
